David Hockney is one of the most publicized British pop artists since the Second World War. During his career, he moved to Los Angeles and the landscape became a really important feature of Hockney’s work. Other changes in Hockney’s work included him starting to use acrylics rather than oil paints and making more use of photography for documentation. This also changed the way that Hockney’s work was perceived, as his work is now known as abstract and quite personal.
Some of Hockney’s most well known work is a piece of work called “A Bigger Splash.” This name was later used by a filmmaker Jack Hazan to name his film after Hockney’s swimming pool painting. Hockney’s work had gained him much esteem and attention all over the world. Critics instantly recognised the power of his art.
Richard Hamilton was one of the first pop artists of this era. One piece that was made by Richard Hamilton was considered to be one of the first pop art piece’s that was created. This piece of artwork was called “Just what is it that makes today’s home so different, so appealing?” This piece of artwork was very different as it was something that was new and it shown exactly what a typical household was like during that time.
Hamilton is probably best known as one of the finding members of the Independent Group, which contributed to the establishment of pop art in Britain during the 1950’s. Hamilton was responsible for showing people what pop art was all about in Britain. The Independent Group aimed at broadening taste into more popular, less academic art. Hamilton later helped organise the, “Man, Machine, and Motion” exhibition in 1955, and ‘This is Tomorrow’ where Hamilton’s first piece of pop art “Just what is it that makes today’s home so different, so appealing?” was displayed for people to look at his work.
Here I have changed my photos into the style of 2 different artists. One artist being David Hockney, where I have changed two of my photos into his style of work and the final image being in the style of Richard Hamilton’s piece of work on, ‘Swingeing London III.’ The two images that I have created from David Hockney’s inspiration was from two pieces of art that he made called, ‘Garrowby Hill’ and the other piece of art called, ‘Big Splash.’
